Research and Rights Clearance is invaluable for all documentary researchers, writers, directors and producers to learn about navigating the world of research and clearances. Learn the latest on how to obtain, reduce costs and limit risks using stock footage, stills and recorded music. The workshop will run over two evenings.

EVENING ONE
Monday February 12, 2007

Content/Editorial Research:

  • Where to go to conduct research
  • How to approach people and organizations
  • How to find and record information
  • Internet research
  • Solving privacy and permission conundrums
  • Gaining and securing access
  • Pre-interviewing techniques
  • Release forms
  • Error and omissions insurance

Music Clearances:

  • Music Clearance 101 – definitions, costs, rights required
  • Creative tips on how to clear music with a budget in mind.

EVENING TWO
Tuesday February 13, 2007

Visual Research:

  • How to find the best sources of visual material - photographs, archival film, graphics, and maps
  • What is copyright?
  • Finding and buying stock footage and stills
  • Negotiating terms and rates
  • Inexpensive alternatives to expensive archival footage
  • Documenting “due diligence” or best effort

Question and answer sessions, copious handouts, and lots of practical “how to” tips will be offered as part of the course.

Eligibility Requirements:

This course is intended for media professionals including producers, story consultants, directors, researchers, post production supervisors, and editors with at least 3-5 years experience.

Elizabeth Klinck has worked as Producer, Researcher and Clearance Specialist on hundreds of award-winning Canadian, American and British documentary films that have garnered Emmy, Gemini, Peabody and Academy awards. In 2004, she taught documentary research and development at Ryerson University and has led research and rights clearance workshops at Hot Docs Film Festival, the National Film Board of Canada, CTV, Discovery, History Television, the Reel World Film Festival, the World Congress of History Producers, and at the Atlantic and Vancouver International Film Festivals. Elizabeth is a member of the Board of Directors for the World Congress of History Producers, FOCAL, the Audio Visual Trust, and the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival. She is a founding member of the Visual Researchers Society of Canada, a member of DOC and WIFT Toronto. She was nominated for a Gemini Award, FOCAL’s Visual Researcher of the Year and in 2006 for an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft – Research. Elizabeth is a graduate of Queen’s University.
