The third annual WIFT International Short Film Showcase, which celebrates the outstanding filmmaking talents of women worldwide, will take place on Wednesday March 5, 2008, and feature eight Canadian and international short films. Following the Showcase, there will be a panel with international filmmakers and a cocktail reception. For event details click here.

Panel Details
Featuring international filmmaker Denie Pentecost (Sexy Thing/Australia), Kate Jessop (Desires/United Kingdom), local filmmaker Audrey Cummings (Burgeon and Fade/Toronto) and moderated by Jennifer Chen, General Manager of Ouat Media Distribution, a premier distribution company specializing in the international promotion, distribution and sales of short film content.

2008 TORONTO SHOWCASE SELECTED FILMS

Chinese Dumplings / 8 minutes
Michelle Hung / USA

Synopsis:
Two little Chinese-American girls prove that they will do anything to escape their daily violin practice.

Director Bio:
Michelle Hung graduated from the MFA Program in Film Directing at UCLA. Her MFA thesis film, Chinese Dumplings was selected for UCLA Directors’ Spotlight at the DGA.

Orchids / 18 minutes
Bryce Dallas Howard / USA

Synopsis:
Beatrice is an amateur photographer who leads a simple, solitary life, until she stumbles upon a mysterious personal ad.

Director Bio:
Bryce Dallas Howard recently starred in SPIDER-MAN 3 for director Sam Raimi. Howard’s additional film credits include LADY IN THE WATER and MANDERLAY. ORCHIDS is her directorial debut, a project she took on as part of Glamour Magazine’s Reel Moments program.

Desires / 1 :42 minutes
Kate Jessop / United Kingdom

Synopsis:
Desires is a composite of stop frame and drawn animation and live action footage based on a poem by Gaia Holmes.

Director Bio:
Kate Jessop is currently artist in residence at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her practice includes experimental film and the visualization of sound encompassing animation and live action.

Happiness / 11 minutes
Sophie Barthes / France/USA


Synopsis: What if happiness was for sale? One evening, after work, Iwona buys a box of happiness in a strange discount store and has to decide what to do with it.

Director Bio: French-born Sophie Barthes grew up in the Middle East and South America. She is currently directing her first feature film COLD SOULS, with Paul Giamatti, David Strathairn and Emily Watson.

Meet-Market.ca / 11 minutes
Geneviève Poulette / Montreal, Canada

Synopsis
Film director Marie-Helene and fashion stylist Zoe have been friends for a long time and single for even longer, until they sign up on "Meet-market.ca," an online dating site. 

Director Bio:
Geneviève studied film production at the Institut National de l’Image et du Son (INIS) in Montreal. Meet-market.ca is her third award-winning short film to date.

Burgeon and Fade / 14 minutes
Audrey Cummings / Toronto, Canada

Synopsis
During a party, the insecurities of a middle-aged mom threaten the close relationship she has with her daughter whose burgeoning beauty has managed to swivel every head in the room.

Director Bio:
Audrey Cummings was born in Quebec and studied at Queen’s University and the Canadian Film Centre. Her short films include A Stolen Moment, The Battle for Arthur, and Burgeon and Fade.

One Hundredth of a Second / 5:20
Susan Jacobson / United Kingdom

Synopsis
Kate is a talented photojournalist. She risks her life to deliver powerful images to the waiting world until a photograph of a Girl changes her life forever.

Director Bio:
Susan grew up in South Africa and Australia before settling in London. She has directed award-winning shorts, music videos and commercials and been broadcast in the UK and around the world.

Sexy Thing / 14 minutes
Denie Pentecost / Australia

Synopsis:
On a dry, suburban day, one child’s secrets can be seen forever…

Director Bio:
Denie has worked on films and completed a number of director’s assignments and courses, namely at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. Sexy Thing is her debut as a writer/director.
