Women in Film and Television – Toronto (WIFT-T) is pleased to announce a Call for Applications for the 2007 Quebecor BWTVF Mentorship Award presented in association with the Banff World Television Festival, June 10-13, 2007.
Women in Film and Television - Toronto (WIFT-T), in partnership with Quebecor Fund’s Professional Development Program Grants for Under-Represented Groups (PDPT), and in association with the BANFF World Television Festival, is pleased to announce Jacqueline Nuwame as the winner of this year’s Quebecor BWTVF Mentorship Award. This national competitive program gives one talented Canadian female or male producer, of a visible minority or Aboriginal group, the invaluable opportunity to prepare for attending the 2007 Banff World Television Festival through an intensive three-month Market Mentorship and Festival Bursary with one of Canada's leading broadcast executives, Karen King. The BWTVF experience is comprehensive, allowing the award winner to take full advantage of the business and creative opportunities available at this world-class festival.
Award Winner Jacqueline Nuwame has eight years of experience in production and has held a variety of positions. She has an array of experience in entertainment production, new media, marketing, and corporate communications. She has also produced several behind the scenes and is also a well-known new media producer. She co-hosted SUNTV’s, We Mean Business and is growing a small specialized production company. Her new media project, Anansi’s World of Folktales a broadband site for showcasing and collecting folktales was exhibited at the 29th International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (Siggraph), 2002 at the San Antonio Children’s Museum and at the 2004 McLuhan Festival of the Future.
Mentor Karen King, is a Production Executive, Dramatic Programming at CanWest MediaWorks commissioning, developing and supervising production drama and comedy series.
As a producer she produced over a dozen award winning films reflecting Chinese, Japanese, South Asian, Jewish, Latin American and Black realities, for the most part with first time directors from those communities. King is the only producer to have twice won the Gemini’s prestigious Canada Award. “Rude” was the feature film with a world premiere
at the Cannes Film Festival, North American premiere as the Perspective Canada Opener and U.S premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. It made Karen the first black woman to produce a theatrically released dramatic feature film in Canada. At the National Film Board of Canada, Karen produced films and developed diversity initiatives like founding the Reel Diversity Competition and the ReelWorld Festival NFB Prize. Karen is on the Board of Directors of Women in Film and Television, the Ontario Panel of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, a member of the Canadian Women in Communications, and the Academy of Cinema and Television. King is Alumna of Simon Fraser University and Norman Jewison’s prestigious Canadian Film Center and the founding VP of the Black Film and Video Network.
The 2007 Quebecor BWTVF Mentorship Award will include:
• One-on-one coaching with top industry executives to develop market-driven projects and pitches
• Complimentary festival registration
• $500 voucher for airfare
• Pitch meetings at the festival
• On-site mentoring at the festival
• Guidance for post-festival follow-up
The Quebecor BWTVF Mentorship Award program is a national initiative open to emerging Canadian producers of a visible minority or Aboriginal group working in television drama, documentary, or lifestyle. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee composed of industry representatives with final decisions announced later in May.
