2006 Quebecor BANFF Mentorship Award Program Winner: Rita Deverell

Women in Film and Television - Toronto (WIFT-T), in partnership with Quebecor Fund’s Professional Development Program Grants for Under-Represented Groups (PDPT), and in association with the BANFF World Television Festival, is pleased to announce Rita Deverell as the winner of this year’s Quebecor BANFF Mentorship Award. This national competitive program awards one talented Canadian female or male producer of a visible minority or Aboriginal group with an intensive three-month Market Mentorship and Festival Bursary with one of Canada's leading broadcast executives, Loren Mawhinney. The award will be presented to Deverell at the festival’s Annual Awards Lunch on Monday, June 12, 2006.

Award Winner Rita Deverell is one of the first Black women in Canada to be a network television host and executive. A founder of Vision TV, she held several senior positions there as well as network presenter. She moved to the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) where she was Director of News and Current Affairs. She has written and performed in her one-woman show Smoked Glass Ceiling and is currently working on two upcoming plays. She is currently developing a television anthology series, which she will be pitching at BANFF to Canadian and international broadcasters.

 

Mentor Loren Mawhinney, Vice President of Factual Entertainment for Barna Alper Productions and Board Member/former Chair of the Banff Television Festival Foundation, is one of Canada's leading broadcast executives with more than twenty years experience in program purchasing, developing talent, regulatory affairs, and financial management. A recognised innovator with a track record of success in the development of high-quality, diverse Canadian entertainment programming, Loren is an industry champion and a valued contributor to the Canadian television arts community. Loren brings her creativity, financial acumen, regulatory experience, and a network
of industry contacts to this mentorship.


The 2006 Quebecor BANFF Mentorship Award will include:

• One-on-one coaching with top industry executives to develop a market-driven project and pitch
• Complimentary Festival registration
• $500 voucher towards airfare
• Festival pitch meetings and on-site support
• Guidance for post-Festival follow-up
• Complimentary Festival programming pass
