This national competitive award will give one emerging Canadian female filmmaker the invaluable opportunity to receive creative support from CBC Television to develop a concept project to showcase the diversity of Canada.
The award winner will receive:
• $7,500 cash award to go towards production costs of a program of up to 30 minutes in length
• Consultation with a CBC drama executive
• A WIFT-T programming pass valued at $1,200
• Award presentation at the prestigious Crystal Awards Gala Luncheon on December 4, 2006 at the Fairmont Royal York

This national program offers one entry-level visible minority or Aboriginal woman the opportunity to advance her career in broadcasting through experience in the Public and Regulatory Affairs department at Alliance Atlantis. The award winner will take part in a comprehensive career development program including:

Teletoon Masters Program: Writing for Animation
Sponsored by Teletoon
This intensive three-part evening course introduces screenwriters to the principles, challenges and opportunities of writing for the Canadian animation industry, with particular emphasis on series television.
The class will explore the steps to creating an animated teleplay. Topics to be covered include understanding the medium; classic story structure; creating distinctive characters; and writing dialogue. The emphasis will be on ‘thinking visually’, and video clips will be used to illustrate the principles discussed. Instructors will also discuss the various roles on a writing team, and the collaborative process by which an episode gets from concept to screen. Students will engage in this process through mock story meetings for existing television series, and each student will develop an idea into a finished ‘beat sheet.’
Eligibility Requirements: This course is intended for media professionals who are looking to begin a career in animation screenwriting. Applicants must submit a current resume, including writing credits, along with a registration request. Class size is limited to a maximum of 20 students, and will be awarded to qualified applicants on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Call for Applications: The Producers Internship
Presented in partnership with Deluxe, Tattersall Sound & Picture, and PS Production Services
The Producers Internship will provide one Canadian producer with coveted hands-on experience and training by giving the producer the opportunity to join three outstanding companies - Deluxe, Tattersall Sound and Picture, and PS Production Services - as an intern to learn about production equipment planning and requirements, and post production video, film and sound. The successful applicant will spend one week with each partner for a total of three weeks. The internship will commence in late November.
Applicants to the The Producers Internship should be emerging Canadian producers who have at least two years experience in the industry and no more than five years experience. The award winner will receive the following:
• One-week internship at Deluxe
• One-week internship at Tattersall Sound and Picture
• One-week internship at PS Production Services
• A $1,000 honorarium
• A WIFT-T programming pass valued at $1,200

WIFT-T Board of Directors Appoints Sue Sheridan
as Executive Director
The Board of Directors of Women in Film and Television - Toronto (WIFT-T) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sue Sheridan as Executive Director.
Sheridan has been Interim Executive Director since April 2006. She joined WIFT-T in 2005 as Director of Programming Development and was named Acting Managing Director in 2006.
“We are more than delighted that someone with Sue’s exceptional leadership ability will be assuming the role of Executive Director,” said WIFT-T Board Chair Wendy MacKeigan. "With the launch of CanadianFilmmaker.com, the development of the Business Learning Initiative certificate program, and the upcoming Crystal Awards in December, the organization under Sue’s capable direction is now clearly well positioned to move to the next level.”

On a monthly basis, WIFT-T opens its doors for a New and Prospective Members Meeting. At the free members’ meeting, we give an overview of the organization; its history, mandate, structure, a breakdown of the courses offered and other benefits of membership. It's the perfect place to network with other members, meet the staff and gain the knowledge you need to begin designing your own career strategy.
The meetings will be held in the Childcare room on the main floor of The Dunfield Club, 110 Eglinton Ave. East. Please enter through the main club door between the parking entrance and Blockbuster. Please indicate to the staff that you are attending the WIFT-T meeting.

WIFTI Announces New Grant for Women Filmmakers or Emerging WIFTI Chapters
Applications are now being accepted for the Women in Film and Television International Devorah Foundation 2006 grant
An award of $1,500 is given on an annual basis to support special projects, training, professional development and/or mentorship opportunities for up-and-coming women filmmakers and/or emerging WIFTI-member film and television communities around the world.
The deadline for applications is November 10, 2006.
Founded by Ina Fichman, the WIFTI Devorah Foundation grants can be used for individual professional development opportunities (including, but not limited to travel grants to attend festivals or workshops, mentorship opportunities, skills development, marketing expenses for films/videos from first-time filmmakers); special projects to assist a group of women in an emerging film community (including, but not limited to training programs, special screenings); or for new/emerging Women in Film and Television chapters to assist in the launch and formation of their group (in this case priority will be given to chapters outside of North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand). The award is not meant to finance film or video projects.

Call for Applications: The Women's Film Preservation Fund (WFPF) of New York Women in Film & Television
The Women's Film Preservation Fund (WFPF) of New York Women in Film & Television is seeking proposals for the funding of restoration and/or preservation of American films in which women have had significant creative positions.
Individuals and not-for-profit organizations are eligible to apply for grants of up to $10,000.
The Women's Film Preservation Fund aims to contribute to an
understanding of the importance of women in film history, and to
increase awareness of the necessity for film preservation. The Fund is committed to working with organizations and individuals with similar goals, and to sharing resources and information with them. In that spirit, we are asking you to inform your colleagues about the Fund, and to make them aware of our grants.
The next deadline for applications is November 30, 2006. A panel of professional filmmakers, film historians, preservationists, curators and educators will review all applications and award the grants, which will be announced in April 2007.

WIFT-T Board Member Sadia Zaman Nominated for
a Gemini Award
Sadia Zaman is the Director of In-House Production at VisionTV and represents the WIFT-T board at the international level (WIFTI).
Over the past four years she has led the network’s Gemini Award-winning production team through the creation of two shows: Credo, which explores the spiritual and moral beliefs of prominent Canadians; and 360 Vision, the flagship current affairs show that offers an in-depth examination of faith and spirituality in contemporary Canadian life.
This year 360 Vision earned its first Gemini Award nomination for Best News/Information Program.
"From the very beginning, Senior Producer John Scully and I have had the goal of making 360 Vision one of the best current affairs programs in Canada," said Executive Producer Zaman. "The Gemini nomination is a tribute to the members of our small but dedicated team, who have laboured relentlessly to tell the kinds of stories no one else is reporting."

1st Annual i CAN Pitch Event
The 1st Annual i CAN Pitch Event will be held in downtown Toronto at the Pantages Hotel on November 17 and 18, 2006. Well-respected members of the film and television community will be invited to participate in this unique event designed to offer writers and creative types the chance to pitch their fresh ideas in a fast-paced, exciting environment. Currently, we have industry professionals representing two outstanding companies who will listen to pitches: Capri Films, whose credits include the Academy Award nominated The Squid & The Whale, and Barna-Alper Productions, who produced HBO's G Spot, and CBC's Shania: A Life In Eight Albums.
Funded by the Government of Canada, this free event will include multiple workshops led by industry professionals. An integral part of the program is a pitching seminar, Honing Your Pitch, led by acclaimed speaker Marguerite Pigott from Film and Television Consulting Services. The seminar will take place on the Opening Night allowing the delegates an opportunity to perfect their pitch for the next day's schedule of events.

The Canadian Film Centre’s Habitat New Media Lab is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2007 session of the TELUS Interactive Art & Entertainment Programme (IAEP), a five-month, post-graduate residency focused on creating inventive interactive narrative projects for the Canadian and international marketplace.
The TELUS Interactive Arts & Entertainment Programme (IAEP) is Canada's first post-graduate programme for new media training and production, based on a philosophy that compelling new media content is created through a collaborative process harnessing a wide range of creative skills, knowledge and talent. Innoversity 2006 Applications for Scholarships & Bursaries
This is the fifth anniversary of the Innoversity Summit. It is an especially important Summit for persons with disabilities who want to further develop their careers in the media, or are looking into the possibility of a career in the media industry. The Summit is one of the most inclusive events in our Industry. Bear in mind, there are hundreds of different kinds of jobs needed by any media organization, both in front of and behind the camera or microphone.
We're inviting you, or other persons with disabilities you may think will be interested, to apply for a number of additional, full registration scholarships.
Bursaries to attend the Summit are also now available. CanWest MediaWorks Bursaries offer a $200 subsidy on registration for the Innoversity Summit and Delegates will pay 35 dollars plus GST at the door.
These scholarships and bursaries are in addition to earlier scholarships offered by CHUM and the CBC which have already been awarded. Applications for a scholarship or a bursary will be received up until October 11.
