Emerging Level Certificate Program: Project Management
Presented by WIFT-T in partnership with Humber School of Media Studies and Information Technology

Date: March 15, 29 & April 4, 2008 (Saturdays)


Project Management
This course will enable participants to manage the creation and launch of film, television and media projects in a highly professional and effective manner. This course will examine critical methods for content creation including a strategy that maximizes current resources and timeframes as well as providing a roadmap for future changes or additions to the project. We will examine the business needs of managing project budgets, cash flow, overall costs, timelines and project team resources. Finally, we will examine how project management can support business growth.

Shibley Righton Presents: Project Management in Convergent Media

The Breakfast Stories Series, in partnership with Shibley Righton LLP, offers an inside look at the real world of working in film and television — straight from those at the top of their game. Through in-depth interviews and audience interaction, participants will learn what it really takes to work in a range of film and television careers.

2008 Short Film Showcase

The Annual International Short Film Showcase, in honour of International Women’s Day, will be held Wednesday,
March 5th, 2008
at the NFB.

It will feature eight Canadian and international award-winning short films.

Following the Showcase, there will be a panel with filmmakers Kate Jessop (UK) and Denie Pentecost (Australia) and Audrey Cummings (Toronto), and a reception with refreshments.

Goodmans Presents: In Conversation With...International Filmmakers

Offered as a member-exclusive sneak preview to the Short Film Showcase, this is an in-depth and interactive conversation with two international filmmakers and includes a screening of their films.

The filmmakers include:

Denie Pentecost (Sexy Thing/Australia)
Denie has worked on films and completed a number of director’s assignments and courses, namely at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. Sexy Thing is her award-winning debut as a writer/director.

Kate Jessop (Desires/United Kingdom)
Kate Jessop is currently artist in residence at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her practice includes experimental film and the visualization of sound encompassing animation and live action.

Annual General Meeting

WIFT-T’s Annual General Meeting is great time to meet board members and staff. It is also your chance to vote for
the new Board of Directors.

WIFT-T full members are eligible to run for the Board. Skills in fundraising, marketing/branding and legal are desirable. This year’s AGM will be held the second week of May.

2008 Quebecor Mentorship Award
Presented in partnership with The Quebecor Fund

The Quebecor Mentorship Award is a national initiative designed to provide one Canadian female or male television producer of a visible minority or Aboriginal group the invaluable opportunity to prepare for the Banff World Television Festival 2008 through an intensive one-month Market Mentorship and Festival Bursary.

Emerging to intermediate producers, with at least one broadcast credit and two projects at an advance stage of development for broadcast, are encouraged to apply now. Deadline for applications is Monday, April 21, 2008.

2008 Astral Media Mentorship Award
Presented in partnership with Astral Media

The first annual Astral Media Mentorship Award is a national competitive program, which will give one talented Canadian female or male producer of a visible minority, Aboriginal or disabled group, the invaluable opportunity to prepare for the 2008 Banff World Television Festival through an intensive mentorship in Toronto and at Banff, as well as a festival bursary.

Emerging producers, with a minimum of three years industry experience and up to two credits in children’s and/or drama programming, are encouraged to apply now. Deadline for applications is Monday, April 21, 2008.

CHEECHOO RECEIVES NATIONAL ABORIGINAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Hats off to Shirley Cheechoo (Dir' Lab '02) for receiving the National Aboriginal Achievement Award in the Arts category.  Cheechoo is an accomplished artist She has received the CTV Fellowship Award and Eagle Spirit Award.  In addition, she has had films screened at the Sundance Film Festival, the AIF San Francisco and Vancouver Film Festival.  The National Aboriginal Achievement Award Gala will be televised March 7th at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.

POLLEY HONOURED WITH 2008 CLAUDE JUTRA AWARD

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (ACCT) officially announced that Sarah Polley (Dir’ Lab ’01) will receive the Claude Jutra Award for her film Away From Her. The film has been nominated for 12 Genie Awards, including Polley’s two nominations for Achievement in Direction and Adapted Screenplay. The annual Award recognizes outstanding achievement by a first-time feature film director and was established in 1933 in honour of renowned Quebec director, the late Claude Jutra.
