Getting Ready for MIP-TV 2006

WIFT-T presents the MIP-TV Mentorship Program, an introduction to the largest TV market on the calendar. MIP-TV, the world's audiovisual and digitial content market in Cannes, France, takes place April 3-7, 2006.

The mentorship program is tailored to emerging producers who have not attended MIP before and who are interested in learning how to utilize this important market to its potential. Producers interested in attending MIP-TV or MIPCOM in the future are also welcome to attend. The program consists of three evening preparation sessions prior to the MIP-TV (April 3-7, 2006) plus a session to be scheduled during MIP-TV.

WIFT-T Career Development Workshop: People-to-People Skills of the Job Search
Presented by Cultural Careers Council Ontario (CCCO) and WIFT-T, in collaboration with its arts partners, Theatre Ontario and LIFT (Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto).

This full-day program for emerging media and theatre professionals focuses on developing the interpersonal skills necessary in order to launch and break through to the next level. Participants will learn networking techniques and strategies, and interview skills through a combination of class instruction and interactive activities.

Morning Session: The Interview - Landing the Job
You've sent in the resume, you've followed up and...you get the call. The interview is your opportunity to close the deal and land that dream job. Call for Applications: NBC Universal Development Incubator
Presented in partnership with Telefilm Canada and the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC)

This initiative is designed to develop market-driven feature films and support the next generation of Canadian feature film professionals. The program provides five emerging and intermediate producer and writer teams, with feature length dramatic projects in development, the opportunity to work with consultants and select industry advisors in a series of small group sessions to advance their projects through one draft of their script and to prepare preliminary marketing packages.

Call for Applications: Kodak New Vision Fellowship
WIFT-T is currently accepting applications for the Kodak New Vision Fellowship, presented in partnership with Kodak Canada Entertainment Imaging. This national initiative provides one exceptional Canadian female director with the invaluable opportunity to prepare for the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival, through intensive industry coaching and a TIFF bursary, followed by a two-month creative mentorship with an established director.

Call for Applications Coming Soon: Telefilm Canada Executive Management Program

This national initiative will provide up to 10 MICRO and SME television production companies, with a maximum of two senior management representatives per company, the opportunity to develop their management team through an intensive five-day workshop, based on the successful Incubator model. The program continues with a six-month mentorship matching industry leaders with Incubator participants.

The WIFT-T Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at 6:30pm at The National Film Board, 150 John Street. Elections to the Board of Directors will take place at the AGM.

The keynote speaker for the evening will be Sarah Crawford, Vice President, Public Affairs, CHUM Ltd. All members in good standing can attend the Annual General Meeting. New WIFT-T staff appointments

Sue Sheridan, Acting Managing Director of WIFT-T, is pleased to announce the appointments of Christine Amendola as Communications Manager and Lynnette Gryseels as Programming Manager. Both positions are effective immediately.

Amendola comes to WIFT-T from the Global Television Network where she was the Media Relations Manager for five years. Prior to joining Global, she worked in the publishing industry as a writer and editor for Maclean Hunter, the Globe and Mail, and Southam Inc.

Gryseels joined WIFT-T in September 2005. Prior to being named Programming Manager, she began at WIFT-T as Communications Manager. Before joining WIFT-T, she worked at Hot Docs, the Toronto International Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, and several other festivals in a variety of communications and programming roles.

WIFT International News:

Women in Film and Video of Washington, D.C. (WIFV) to host the Fifth Annual Kids World Film Festival on Thursday, April 27
The Kids World Film Festival - an educational, fun-filled event featuring uplifting films by, for and about children - will be presented to fifth and sixth graders from schools in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

The deadline for submission is March 15: Seeking films from domestic and international filmmakers that touch upon issues of peace, tolerance, unity and understanding among all people in an entertaining and educational way. Films must be approximately three to 30 minutes in length and portray children from different countries and cultures in a positive light. Four to six films will be selected.

Women in Film-Seattle Announces Delayed Return of Nell Shipman Awards
Women in Film-Seattle has announced that the Nell Shipman Excellence in Filmmaking Awards, which honor female filmmakers in the Northwestern United States and British Columbia, will return October 2006.

Entry Qualifications and Application Guidelines:
Film, video, television, and/or new media work that has been completed within the period beginning January 2001 through December 2005. Submissions will be accepted in multiple categories:

Feature Film: Dramatic or Comedic - Short Film: Dramatic or Comedic - Documentary Feature - Documentary Short – Corporate - Corporate Non/Profit - Animated Program - Broadcast Commercial - PSA - Educational - Instructional - Experimental - Student Project - Television Special - TV Series

Entries are welcome from the Pacific Northwest - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Montana, and British Columbia. Viewing copies must be submitted on NTSC VHS format or professional DVD.

Application/Submission fee: $30 US for members, $40 US non-members.

NFB: Toronto premiere! Marron, la piste créole en Amérique
Celebrating Les Rendez-vous de la Francophonie, please join the National Film Board of Canada for the Toronto premiere of André Gladu’s Marron, la piste créole en Amérique.

One of the last documentaries filmed in New Orleans prior to the devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Marron is an eye-opening NFB documentary about an America rooted in the Louisiana bayous. This is an America with Black, French-speaking origins, whose people are continuing the battle for cultural survival begun by the slaves from whom they are descended. Marron invites viewers to see – and, above all, hear – the modern-day incarnation of this French-speaking community that helped forge our North American identity. The film will be presented in original French.

Also, on February 24 and 25, the NFB Cinema is staying open late into the night to host the 3rd annual Les Nomades Toronto International French Short Film Festival. This year’s festival includes an intimate onstage discussion with 2006 Outstanding Achievement Award recipient Werner Herzog, as well as national spotlights on Japan and France. Hot Docs will once again mount an intensified full roster of professional development and market events for documentary practitioners, including the renowned Toronto Documentary Forum running May 3 and 4, 2006 (separate accreditation required, register by March 16, 2006 for Observer Seats). Participants in last year’s Forum reported having secured a total of $3M in additional funding.

Cannes Film Market 2006, Cannes, France, May 17 to 28, 2006

Telefilm Canada is currently soliciting applications from Canadian companies for Marché du Film 2006, which will take place in Cannes from May 17 to May 28, 2006.

The Canada Pavilion at Marché du Film offers you exclusive services to expand your business activities and to help you meet new partners during the festival.

In keeping with tradition, Telefilm Canada will receive registration requests for industry professionals wishing to take advantage of the Canada Pavilion umbrella registration fee reserved for its participating producers.
