WIFT International News:

Call for Submissions: The 2007 HIFF/NYWIFT To the Point Series – Entry Point to WIFTI 2008 Short Film Showcase

WIFT-T members are cordially invited to participate in the fifth year of To the Point: Women Telling Stories Through Media, the dynamic program of short films presented by New York Women in Film & Television and the Hamptons International Film Festival, October 17 – 21, in South Hampton, New York. NYWIFT/HIFF To the Point is again the North American point of entry for the upcoming WIFTI SHORT FILM SHOWCASE 2008*.

The series provides a unique opportunity for WIFT members to showcase their filmmaking talents by presenting shorts – fictional narratives, animations, documentaries and experimental films and videos – that bring unorthodox and original perspectives to the experiences of women from around the globe. Previous To the Point programs have included works from Canada, New Zealand, Germany, Australia, England and the U.S.

WIFT-T members can participate in this exciting showcase by visiting the New York Women in Film & Television website, www.nywift.org. There is a link to the NYWIFT/HIFF application (which must be submitted in duplicate.) All films must be under 20 minutes long, and must have been completed by June 30, 2004. There is no fee to submit for this series. Selections for the series are made by a panel of NYWIFT member filmmakers and by the Hamptons International Film Festival programming department.

PLEASE NOTE: Entering To the Point does not automatically enter you in The Hamptons International Film Festival shorts category, and it does not preclude members from submitting separately to HIFF. For entering separately into the Hamptons International Film Festival shorts category, please visit the festival website at: http://hamptonsfilmfest.org.

WIFT International initiated the first worldwide Women in Film and Television International Short Film Showcase in 2006, celebrating International Women’s Day in March. Participating chapters screened selected films made by women from chapters around the world. NYWIFT/HIFF To the Point is again the North American point of entry for the WIFTI Short Film Showcase 2008. If WIFT-T members wish to submit their film for consideration to the 2008 WIFTI Showcase, they will be asked to sign a section of the HIFF/NYWIFT application indicating their interest. (Acceptance in the Hamptons/NYWIFT program does not guarantee selection in the WIFTI showcase.)

To the Point is an excellent path to visibility for women filmmakers from around the world.

Call for Submissions: Make a Short Film for imagineNATIVE 2007

Do you have a great idea for a five-minute short film?  Explore 16mm film through LIFT's Handmade Filmmaking Workshop, shoot and edit your own film, and see your film on screen at the 8th Annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, which will take place in Toronto from October 17th to 21st, 2007.

About the Course:
Handmade Filmmaking in 16mm (VALUE: $500) Seven consecutive Sundays, July 8- August 19, 10am-6pm

The goal of this course is to investigate those unique aspects of film - the film strip itself, the chemical composition of the cinematic image, the division of the film image into frames, the manipulation of the film image by optical means - which will become increasingly important as the medium differentiates itself from the other arts of the moving image.

This all-inclusive, hands-on film course will give you a basic foundation in camera operation, hand processing, optical printing, and a wide variety of animation techniques. This course is open to absolute beginners and is a great opportunity to develop a project beyond the idea stage.

Participants will receive the opportunity to use the following LIFT equipment and LIFT facilities outside of designated class time:
· 1 Bolex for 1 weekend or 2 week days
· 8 hours with the animation camera
· 8 hours with either of LIFT's optical printers
· 8 hours of darkroom time
· 12 hours of flatbed editing time
· 100 ft. of 3374 black and white hi-con 16mm film

Eligibility Criteria: This call is open to Aboriginal candidates only. Preference will be given to emerging artists or to video artists who have not worked in film. Candidates must commit to attending the LIFT training workshop for seven consecutive Sundays starting July 9.

Please email your one-page short film idea, a statement on why you would like to participate, and a bio to kpotts@imaginenative.org.
