TELETOON Masters Program: Writing for Animation
Sponsored by TELETOON
This intensive four-part course for professional writers only introduces screenwriters to the principles, challenges and opportunities of writing for the Canadian animation industry, with particular emphasis on series television.
Over four evenings, the class will explore the steps to creating an animated teleplay. Topics to be covered include understanding the medium; classic story structure; creating distinctive characters; and writing dialogue. The emphasis will be on ‘thinking visually’, and video clips will be used to illustrate the principles discussed. Instructors will also discuss the various roles on a writing team, and the collaborative process by which an episode gets from concept to screen. Students will engage in this process through mock story meetings for existing television series, and each student will develop an idea into a finished ‘beat sheet.’
To receive the most benefit from this workshop, some work outside of class will be necessary. Instructors will contact students prior to the start of the workshops to advise them on preparation for this class.
Eligibility Requirements: This course is intended for media professionals who are looking to begin a career in animation screenwriting. Applicants must submit a current resume, including writing credits, along with a registration request. Class size is limited to a maximum of 20 students, and will be awarded to qualified applicants on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Location: National Film Board, 150 John St. (at Richmond)

Canada Pavilion at The Tokyo International Anime Fair 2007
Tokyo Big Sight, March 22 to 25, 2007
The Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF), a four-day annual event launched in 2002, attracted over 220 companies in 2006, including approximately 40 from abroad. The two Industry days attracted over 20,000 buyers, while general public days registered over 30,000 visitors per day. The TAF has been growing steadily since its start and promises to provide even greater opportunities with more than 100,000 visitors expected this year. In addition to the 220 exhibitors, buyers from more than 20 countries including China, Korea, and Taiwan, come to the show each year hoping to find new content and technology.
Following the great success of the Canadian Pavilion at TAF 2006, the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo will again coordinate the Canada Pavilion at TAF 2007, and is planning a networking reception and arrangement of one on one meetings between Canadian companies and companies from Taiwan, Seoul and Japan.
For companies in the anime production industry, or the animation tools sector, the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2007 is an excellent opportunity to meet the principal players of the Asian animation world, be those broadcasters, animation production firms or distributors.
The Embassy has secured exhibition space at the venue and invites Canadian companies interested in exploring the Japanese and Asian market to take advantage of that space to display their promotional material or demo their products. The highly subsidised exhibition allows Canadian participants to rent space for a nominal fee, thus giving them an excellent opportunity to explore one of the most important animation markets in the world without breaking the bank. Canadian companies already scheduled to attend the event, or interested in doing so, are welcome to use the Canada Pavilion as their base during the four days of the event, either as delegates or exhibitors. If you are unable to attend the event, you are welcome to send us pamphlets, posters, videos or other materials that we will display in the Canada Pavilion on your behalf.
For more details on TAF See the official Tokyo International Anime Fair Website at http://www.tokyoanime.jp/en/
