3rd Annual Vortex Competition: April 18-July 19, 2007
Vortex, brainchild of Bill Marshall’s McLuhan International Festival of the Future, has now taken on a life of its own, though remaining part of the Festival. This year focusing on videogame content design, it consists of an industry education series, a coaching session to teach you how to pitch in a business environment, a four-day, four-platform competition juried by industry leaders and experts, mentorship, awards with prizes and networking.
Videogames are the largest grossing sector of the entertainment industry - bigger than movies. But the relationship between Film and TV and videogames is so strong that some believe that it is almost impossible to work in TV and Film today without planning for a videogame spin off. “The impact of videogames on our industry is undeniable,” said Sue Sheridan, Executive Director of Women in Film and Television-Toronto (WIFT-T), a partner of the Vortex program. “With more and more films and television series transitioning to this medium, it is changing the face of the business of entertainment.”
The competition dates are Mobile - June 18, Internet - June 19, PC - June 20 and Console - June 21. Each day 12 contestants will pitch to their platform’s judges. The panel will be composed of respected experts in all fields of business, relevant to helping the contestant get their concept to market, including financiers, venture capitalists, institutional funders, angel to market specialists, representatives from the media and academia, and top industry experts.
Unique to this year’s Vortex is The Coaching Session on May 2. This was planned after last year’s competition to create more parity in the presentations. Included in this extraordinary line up are experts from Ventures West, Bell Business Solutions, Microsoft, Groove Games, Cassels Brock, and City TV. They will address the group on what is expected of them from each specialist’s perspective. Don’t miss the special Industry Sessions, the next one is “Who is watching what and why; Understanding the global audience and unleashing mass creativity” speaker Jason MacIsaac, Executive Editor, Electric Playground and Design Director, Cerebral Vortex Game, on April 18.
The McLuhan Festival is working closely on this year's program with Luigi Ferrara, Director, School of Design, George Brown College, which is a partner and sponsor of the Vortex program. The Festival is also fortunate to list among its sponsors Telefilm Canada and Ontario Media Development Corporation.
Visit www.vortexcompetition.org for further information on the program schedule, industry session events, venue and the coaching session and details on the competition. Application deadline is May 31. Contact: sruda@mcluhanfestival.com.
