WIFT-T Business Management for Media Professionals Program

Designed for working professionals who are looking to advance their careers, the WIFT-T Business Management for Media Professionals Program is presented in partnership with Humber School of Media Studies and Information Technology. The certificate is recommended for working professionals with up to three years experience in the industry, related university or college training and for those transitioned to a new area of the business.
Participants who have taken all six courses will receive a certificate upon graduation. Although it is recommended that all six courses be taken, the program is flexible and participants are welcome to take single sessions. As well, participants have two full cycles to complete all six sessions, should they require the extra time.
When: Courses, beginning with Fundamentals of Media Business Administration: Industry Overview, will take place on Saturdays. Each of the six sessions will run over three Saturdays.

Fees: Each course will cost $250 (plus GST) Members, $300 (plus GST) Non-members
Time: All courses run from 10am-3pm on Saturdays
Availability: Maximum capacity is 25. Available on a first come, first served basis.

Fundamentals of Media Business Administration: Industry Overview

This course is designed to introduce emerging media professionals to the business fundamentals of the film and television industry. Participants will learn about the business environment and the nature of the Canadian media industry, from idea through the creation and on to the screen. The course will introduce and develop core concepts of financing; rights acquisition and management, including digital rights; organizational structures; project management structures; marketing; and emerging technologies. Participants will emerge with a stronger understanding of the who, what, why and how of the Canadian industry in a global context.

Financing Film and Television Production

This course will build on the foundation created in Fundamentals of Media Business Administration. The course focuses on the value of ‘rights' and how these are exploited commercially by various partnerships. Participants will learn about public, private, and alternate financing options as well as negotiation of broadcast and distribution agreements. Downstream and alternate revenue streams based on exploitation of various rights, including digital rights, will also be explored along with basic principles of contract, partnership, intellectual property, copyright law, and the need for expert support in these areas.

Emerging Technologies

This course is designed to help emerging media professionals understand the impact of changing media and changing audiences on the work that they produce. It examines recent changes in technology and platform use by audiences and projected technological advances that may change media consumption Participants will examine existing and emerging platforms to understand the mix of traditional and interactive content that is most appropriate and satisfying for various audiences. They will also gain an understanding of how to plan for technical production depending on the type of project. We will explore how digital production of traditional media is changing the industry and what media professionals need to know about digital film/television production including high definition, and shooting for large screens and small screens.

Project Management

This course will enable participants to manage the creation and launch of film, television and media projects in a highly professional and effective manner. This course will examine critical methods for content creation including a strategy that maximizes current resources and timeframe's as well as providing a roadmap for future changes or additions to the project. We will examine established project management methods and timelines as well as project lifecycles. The business needs of managing project budgets, cash flow, overall costs, timelines and project team resources will also be explored. Finally, we will examine how project management can support business growth.

Marketing Film and Television: Domestic and International

This course is designed to provide an insider's view of the sales and distribution business and its dynamics, and prepares participants to effectively market their projects. Students are introduced to the processes and players involved in the buying, selling, and marketing of film and television productions, both fiction and non-fiction, from feature-length to shorts. The objective of the course is to inform and enlighten emerging film and TV producers and program marketers so they can avoid costly mistakes by planning their distribution in tandem with their productions. The course incorporates group and individual exercises, role-playing, lectures, and discussions. Participants will also benefit from the knowledge and experience of presenters who share practical and useful ways to promote and market productions, explain how to select agents and distributors, and offer years of insight on how to thrive in the competitive domestic and international media marketplace.

Media Career Management Skills

This course will provide students with the skills and strategies to develop their personal marketing package, (which could include a website, demo reel, resume, short bio or a portfolio), and how to use these materials to launch or re-launch careers or small businesses. Participants will learn about resume trends and expectations, and how effective marketing tools can help them succeed in the application and interview processes. As well, students will learn to evaluate the changing marketplace and how to recognize and respond to potential growth and opportunity in their careers and/or small to medium sized businesses.
