Goodmans Presents: The Future of Children's Animation in Canada

Presented by Goodmans LLP
A free networking event exclusively for WIFT-T members

Presented by Goodmans LLP, this is a free networking event exclusively for WIFT-T members. This panel will explore the market pressures on the children’s animation industry in Canada.

In Europe, regulations on advertising to children have put increasing pressure on broadcasters and producers. In Ontario, as recently as April, 2008, a private members bill was put forward to ban all television advertising of food and drinks marketed to children under 13. Political pressure to remove the presence of ‘junk’ food advertising in children’s programming is ever present – will it happen and what will it mean for broadcasters and producers?

Digital media and other choices for entertainment are a challenge all broadcasters are facing. How does this affect the animation industry? Can TV animation budgets ever compete with Hollywood’s animated theatrical releases? Cars II is out next month, and with these growing franchises in studio hands, how does an independent TV producer launch a new show?

Are kids interested in animated TV programs any more? Teletoon is launching Go Girl and YTV has kids ‘reality’ TV programming? Will animation make a comeback?

Goodmans Presents: The Future of Children's Animation in Canada will explore:

  • Is children’s programming viable without “junk” food advertising?
  • Can our current TV programming compete with the high end animated movies and video games available to children today?
  • Is the animation industry becoming one that does ‘segments’ in other shows? Have
  • kids lost their interest in animated TV series?
  • How do changes in the industry impact producers trying to make shows for the Canadian audience?
