Business Management for Media Professionals
Emerging Level Certificate Program
Courses running until May 2008 - single courses available

Designed for working professionals who are looking to advance their careers, the Emerging Level Certificate Program is in partnership with Humber School of Media Studies and Information Technology. The certificate program is recommended for working professionals with at least one year experience in the industry or related university or college training.

Participants who have taken all six courses will receive a certificate upon graduation. Although it is recommended that all six courses be taken, the program is flexible and participants are welcome to take single sessions. As well, participants have two full cycles to complete all six sessions, should they require the extra time. Graduates of each session will receive complimentary admission to a networking breakfast featuring industry professionals speaking on a related topic.

When: Courses, beginning with Fundamentals of Media Business Administration, will take place on Saturdays, launching October 20th. Each of the six sessions will run over three Saturdays. The last course will be finished by the first week of June.

Course Descriptions

Fundamentals of Media Business Administration
October 20, 27 & November 10, 2007
This course is a survey course designed to introduce media professionals to the fundamentals of business administration. Participants will learn about the business environment and nature of the Canadian media industry. They will learn to identify business opportunities, as well as the common forms of business and the advantages and disadvantages of each. The course will introduce and develop core concepts of rights and rights management, including digital rights. Content includes an overview of organizational structure and project management structure. Relevant business systems software will be reviewed particularly as it relates to project funding, budgeting and cash flow forecasting and management. Issues relating to hiring staff, managing teams and motivation and performance evaluation will also be explored.

Financing Film and Television Production
January 12, 19 & February 2, 2008
This course will build on the foundation created in Fundamentals of Media Business Administration, against the background of the Canadian financing environment. The course focuses on the concept of the value of ‘rights' which underpins the industry and how these are exploited commercially by various partnerships. Participants will learn an overview of public, private and alternate financing options and negotiation of broadcast and distribution agreements. Downstream and alternate revenue streams based on exploitation of various rights including digital rights will be explored together with basic principles of contract, partnership and intellectual property and copyright law and the need for expert support in these areas.

Emerging Technologies
February 16, 23 & March 8, 2008
This course is designed to help media professionals understand the impact of changing media and changing audiences on the work that they produce. It examines recent changes in technology and platform use by audiences and projected technological advances that may change media consumption in ways not experienced before now. Participants will examine prevalent existing and emerging platforms to understand the mix of traditional and interactive content that ismost appropriate and satisfying for various audiences. They will also gain an understanding of how to plan for technical production needs depending on the type of project. We will explore how digital production of traditional media is changing the industry and what media professionals need to know about digital film/television production including high definition, and shooting for large screens and small screens.

Project Management
March 15, 29 & April 5, 2008
This course will enable participants to manage the creation and launch of film, television and media projects in a highly professional and effective manner. This course will examine critical methods for content creation including a strategy that maximizes current resources and timeframes as well as providing a roadmap for future changes or additions to the project. We will examine established project management methods and timelines as well as project lifecycles. We will examine the business needs of managing project budgets, cash flow, overall costs, timelines and project team resources. Finally, we will examine how project management can support business growth.

Marketing Film and Television: Domestic and International
April 19, 26 & May 3, 2008
This course is designed to provide an insider's view of the sales and distribution business and its dynamics, and prepares participants to more effectively market their projects. Participants are introduced to the processes and players involved in the buying, selling and marketing of film and television productions, both fiction and non-fiction, from feature-length to shorts. The objective of the course is to inform and enlighten emerging film and TV producers and program marketers so they can avoid costly mistakes by planning their distribution in tandem with their productions. The course incorporates group and individual exercises, role-playing, lectures and discussions. Participants will also benefit from the knowledge and experience of presenters who share practical and useful ways to promote and market productions, explain how to select agents and distributors, and offer years of insight on how to thrive in the competitive domestic and international media marketplace.

Media Career Management Skills
May 24, 31 & June 7, 2008
This course will provide students with the skills and strategies to develop their personal marketing package, (which could include a website, demo reel, resume, short bio or a portfolio), and use these materials to launch or re-launch your career or your small business. Participants will learn about resume trends and expectations, and how effective marketing tools can help them succeed in the application and interview processes. Additionally, students will learn to evaluate the changing marketplace; how to recognize and respond for potential growth and opportunity in their careers and/or small to medium sized businesses.
